What day of cycle is egg retrieval done?

May an egg retrieval day vary between patients because of other factors?

During ovarian stimulations patients are under close supervision. The ultrasound scan is made by the doctor to check the response to medication but also to schedule the day of egg retrieval. Prior to the scheduled egg retrieval date, the trigger shot would be given to help eggs mature.

Answer from the fertility expert:
Patricio Calamera, Specialist in Reproductive Medicine

The day of the cycle of an egg retrieval depends on response to the protocol, IVF protocol and the medication. It is usually on day 12 but it can be one day after or one day before. It is not mathematical but we can say that around day 12.

Absolutely, typically stimulation starts on the second or third day of the period when the ovaries are quiet, when the hormones are down you start giving them stimulation injections. The stimulation phase can last anything from 9 to 14 or up to 9 to 16 days, depending on the patients. It’s absolutely patient dependent, women with a very good ovarian reserve may not take that many days of stimulation, or even that higher a dose of stimulation to respond well but women with a very low ovarian reserve may need a higher dose and longer exposure to stimulation, so the range is between 9 to 14 or even up to 16 days sometimes. On an average usually between day 11 and day 12 of stimulation most patients are ready for an egg collection or trigger rather. So you give them the trigger and then 36 hours later you perform the egg collection.
