The embryos that reach the blastocyst stage that is they are 100-cell embryos can be frozen for consequent frozen embryo transfer. However, not only the number of embryos is important. The embryologists take into account their quality and their grading.
There is no maximum number of embryos that we can freeze. However, due to ethical considerations, we believe that the number of embryos obtained during stimulation or treatment should align with the reproductive goals of the couple. For example, if a couple desires to have 3 children, freezing 5 or 6 blastocysts would be reasonable to meet their reproductive plan. However, if a couple intends to have only 1 baby, freezing a high number of embryos may not be beneficial. In fact, it may lead to ethical dilemmas later on regarding what to do with the surplus embryos. Therefore, it is important to create an appropriate number of embryos that align with the reproductive goals of the couple.
It’s typical to say how many embryos are a good number to freeze. Of course, it may depend on the biological condition the patient has and also the kind of treatment the patient is doing. If we are talking about a young patient with potentially good quality eggs and good quality embryos it is likely that it would have a higher number of embryos to be frozen. However, we are talking about an older patient is likely that the number of potential embryos will be much lower. In the end, it also has to be considered that when we recommend doing the preimplantation genetic screening, when the embryo is previously tested will just keep the good quality and also euploid unhealthy ones. However, we are not testing the embryos, of course, we also keeping some embryos that will be transferred but the one implant because of chromosomic alterations. So, in the end, giving an exact number to say whether it would be a good number or not is typical because everything will depend on the patient and also the treatment that we have undergone.
