There is no minimum number of oocytes that we should consider when considering IVF because the results depend more on quality than quantity. For example, if we have a 34-year-old woman with a low ovarian reserve and blocked tubes, even if she only produces 2 or 3 follicles, we should consider proceeding with IVF and retrieving these eggs. If they are of good quality, they could likely result in 2 blastocysts, which offer good pregnancy rates for the couple. However, if we have the same case with a patient who is 42 or 43, these 2 eggs may not be sufficient. Therefore, the number of eggs needed depends a lot on the age of the patient.
So, if we have too many eggs, we need to see if the eggs fertilized normally with IPSI or IVF conventional but if for example both are fertilized, in this case, we will be able to say we have good embryos for transfer and if we have pregnancy or we have an embryo suitable to freeze it would be a good thing
Two eggs can be plenty for IVF if that’s what you’ve managed to produce. I’ve definitely seen pregnancies from a single egg retrieved that managed to make it all the way through and get transferred and make a baby. Obviously the odds are getting a bit lower if you’ve only got two. You’re putting more of your eggs in two baskets – if that makes sense. Yes, two eggs is enough for IVF. Often, if you have a scan before your egg collection and they see that there are only two follicles, they might make a decision to switch over to a different treatment style rather than doing IVF but IVF is still an option even with two eggs.
