Sergi Rovira Fontanals is the Director of the Assisted Human Reproduction Laboratories at Fertilab Barcelona and Fertibank, Fertilab's own gamete bank. With more than two decades of experience in clinical embryology and assisted reproduction, Sergi has built a solid career at the intersection of laboratory excellence, reproductive science and international clinical development. He holds a degree in Biology from the Universitat de Barcelona and is currently completing an Industrial PhD at the Universitat de Girona, focused on the impact of sperm DNA condensation and protamination on embryo development and ICSI outcomes. His research has contributed to scientific publications in leading journals such as Human Reproduction and Biological Research, exploring the role of sperm chromatin integrity in embryo development, particularly in highly controlled clinical contexts such as ICSI cycles using good-quality oocytes from young donors. Before joining Fertilab Barcelona, Sergi worked as an embryologist at the Centro de Infertilidad y Reproducción Humana and later at Institut Marquès, where he also coordinated the Clane unit in Ireland. During this period, he developed strong expertise in embryo cryopreservation and obtained the Cryotech Special Instructor certification. He subsequently served as Project Manager at Fertty International / Reproclinic, leading the international expansion of the clinic across the USA, Canada, France and the UK. Today, as Laboratory Director at Fertilab Barcelona, Sergi leads a highly specialised team committed to precision, safety, traceability and continuous innovation in assisted reproduction. His work reflects Fertilab's commitment to combining advanced laboratory technology with a highly personalised and patient-centred approach to fertility care.
