In general, no. In general, high AMH correlates with PCOS and with an-ovulation. It is not always that high AMH will be in correlation with absence of ovulation, it may be and more often we found that if AMH is high but high AMH per se does not cause infertility of course. AMH is the molecule which regulates the growth of follicles and recruitment of follicles and the main role of AMH molecule is to prevent all follicles growing at the same time so, it is like saying follicles and forming them to grow from time to time.
High AMH levels can play a role through the FSH sensitivity of the follicles. Basically, women with high AMH, there are the women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and sometimes extreme AMH cannot lead the stimulated drug to have the right response and that is because they can decrease the FSH sensitivity inside the follicles. High AMH can interfere with the metabolism of androgens, so they can make the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome not respond the same way through the stimulation but desn’t make the difference to the quality of the eggs. Can make the difference to the response in the IVF treatment.
I have never heard of high AMH causing infertility apart from with PCOS.
Interestingly it is always thought that the higher the AMH, the better and indeed the higher the AMH, the more eggs we are likely to get during a stimulation cycle. Having said that, there is a subgroup of women with polycystic ovarian syndrome who have a very high ovarian reserve and a high AMH but consequently they are not able to ovulate in natural cycles. Therefore even though their treatment is likely to be successful, paradoxically their chances of natural conception are lower. In summary a high AMH is good but not always when it comes to natural conception.
